Tips and Pricing
Guide!
Even
though we will have a lot more tips in our forum area, we will put a few
of them down which we have come up with. Go
with your gut as we mentioned before is the best thing to
do. Go
to auctions to learn about different items and get an idea on
pricing. Be
ready to always bargain, especially on a multiple day sale or later in the
first day.
Nothing
worse than almost having your hand on the perfect item, and before you
know it, its snatched up by someone else. You could always tell a little
white lie and say, “oh, I am sorry, That was mine, I just sat it down for
a minute while I was looking at this (at that time you pick up the first
thing you see) OR you can follow them around the sale and hope they set
the great, can’t go without item down so you can pick it up. The first one
works better :>) Be
one of the first of the season (early spring) to have your sale. People
are hungry for sales. They have waited all winter, and they want out there
and they want to buy, buy, buy. I bet if your one of the first ones in
your town to have a sale, you could sell them a box of dirt for twice the
money. Or having a sale late in the season when you think it’s to cold,
works very well. Our last sale was a Christmas items only sale, we made so
much money, and people were here in droves. At this time we had an organ
for sale. One lady sat and played Christmas songs and the sale was really
fun. (nobody bought the organ but they knew it worked). It sold a few
weeks later from someone who was at our yard sale. Put
your larger items up in the front of the yard or driveway if you have the
room. Like Big Santa’s, or dining room tables or hutch or nice furniture.
This will draw in the crowds. Lure them in with the best items at your
sale. One
of the best ways to lure someone into a sale is have a tent or tents set
up. If your tables are close to the road, they can just do a drive by and
not bother stopping if they don’t see something interesting to invite them
in. If they can’t see what is for sale they will get out and look. The
chance of making a sale is a heck of a lot better once you get the
customer out of the car. I
love watching the Ellen show. One day on her hour show she talked about
yard sales. She made mention on how you can do a drive by to see what’s
for sale. She said, “Isn’t it embarrassing when someone stays in the car,
looks, than just drives away? It’s like saying, “Hey, your junk is just to
junky for me.” Have you ever
done this? Has this ever happened to you? She is right, it’s
embarrassing. Another
tip. If your sale is going to be a two day sale, make sure you have enough
to sell for two days. Or put out big signs on your garage doors or tent
saying “come back tomorrow for new items and lower prices”. Most of the
time a customer will only stop at a sale one time, unless they think your
loading up again. This to can be put this in the newspaper ad. Have it read “ two day sale, new
items daily, way to much to mention or to put out in one day.” Or sell
with a friend or family member to make the sale more plentiful. Make sure
when there is a lull in the sale, to straighten up your items. Get them
off the ground and unto a table. Make your junk look inviting. For
pricing guide visit this site below.
We think these prices on the low end are good for most maximum yard
sale prices. A good example
would be a blouse should be no more than $3.00. However, an adding machine should
not be more that $10.00 and not $24 as on the site below. This list is also very good
for tax deductions of donated items. http://www.salvationarmysouth.org/valueguide.htm |
